Hi Kristin, thank you for sharing such a nice story. I do have a Grade 10 student gushing "F" words. He would apologise for the language abuse once I reminded him but get back to it 2 minutes later. I agree that people like them would verbally urinate to mark the territory as an "alpha male", whether on a refreshing Tuesday morning or on an exhausting Thursday afternoon. On one hand, I'd like to encourage and inspire them as much as I can. On the other hand, I am short of classroom management tricks in my pocket to keep other students to the class and my pace on the track. Many times, it seems like a one or the rest dilemma, and unfortunately I'm not a wise or adept shepherd.

This conflict is so real for teachers, Kevin-Augustine - that wanting to support all of your students and also wanting to GET THROUGH THE LESSONS. I remember this well. Hang in there with your 10th grader! Hearing about his colorful vocab and his apologies, it sounds like he's grappling with some conflicting impulses too. It's rough out there teaching and learning in a pandemic. We appreciate you!
