RPR 107: Scenes from the cutting room floor
a hairy Odd One In episode, queer farming, the soothing sounds of air traffic control
Hi, misift fam, and welcome to our new subscribers! It’s been a couple of weeks. I’ve been plowing through the 7 stages of grief as I work towards accepting that I have tragically lost my Rose Bush War (RIP, Midas Touch), and I’ve been heads-down producing Odd One In’s upcoming season. READERS AND LISTENERS! This podcast is on fire and I’m so excited for all of these episodes to flow though your earbuds. Did you catch our first teaser that dropped today??? I’ve got you.
SOMETHING TO LISTEN TO
If you hang out with lesbians, you’ve seen some remarkable hair. If you don’t hang out with lesbians (you should), you’ve probably at least been stunned by a few of them and their cool undercuts in ROCK PAPER RADIO. Like Keri. Or Paula. Or Mellina and Yosh.
Today’s 2-minute Odd One In teaser is a homage to some of the best lesbian hair I’ve ever had the privilege of seeing evolve over many years. The mullet in question belongs to Stanford scientist, lesbian separatist, and mom Jess Silver, who is our feature outsider making her own way in episode 2.
(Did you miss episode 1 featuring Korean American musician Old Chingu who found his hip hop heart after a night in jail talking to God while high on Ecstasy and LSD? Click 👇)
No spoilers, but I will say this: As I’ve been producing Jess’ episode over the last few weeks, I’ve had to take breaks because I’ve been laugh-crying too much to edit the audio. Enjoy and spread the word—Odd One In is back at it! Click Jess’ glorious photo below to listen.
SOMETHING TO READ
Another thing you should know about Jess is that in addition to being a Stanford scientist, she is also the co-founder of Silverwell Farm and a 34-acre Queer Land Project that’s home to about a dozen gay women and non-binary farmers and punks (and a few of their children). I’m not saying Jess is a anarchist cult leader, but I’m also not saying she isn’t. So.
Here’s some fascinating background reading that might put Jess’ mission in context. From Jaya Saxena for Eater: Queer Farmers Are Changing the Landscape.
SOMETHING TO HOLD ON TO
Maybe because I’ve been deep in audioland again for Odd One In, but it was love at first listen for me at lofiatc.com. The site mixes live air traffic control with lofi hip hop and the effect is deeply soothing and a little unsettling. Who thinks of these things??? Apparently a brilliant audiophile who goes by Yvonne. You can search by specific airports—just add ‘K’ in front of the airport abbreviation, like a West Coast FM radio station. So, for Chicago O’hare, search KORD; or for Sea-Tac International, search KSEA. You can also just press “random airport” and let Yvonne lead the way. Have a nice flight.
THAT’S A WRAP ON ISSUE 107
Thanks for listening, reading, and holding on, friends. I’ll be in New York with Creative Capital presenting The Family Court Report next week(!!), so look for me in your inbox the week after. In the meantime, happy Pride month, queers and allies. Stay safe out there with your rad hair and big love.
See you the week after next.
K.
