Odd One In is a podcast that shares stories of misfits making their own way. The show is hosted and produced by 2021 AIR New Voices Scholar Kristin Leong. This podcast is a production of ROCK PAPER RADIO and is supported by 4Culture and The Slants Foundation. Listen and subscribe here.
Odd One In’s second episode shares Jess Silver’s lesbian separatist journey in DIY baby-making, climate change researching, and anarchist queer farming.
In this romp of an audio adventure, Jess gives us a glimpse into the literal path she forged (in muddy, flapping socks) to her off-the-grid life on Silverwell Farm—all while working full-time as a scientist.
Jess’ 34-acre cooperative experiment is just outside of Olympia, Washington. The project is home to about a dozen hardworking queers and a handful of children.
In addition to raising kids, Jess and her landmates are also raising pigs and sheep, building shelters, and tapping trees for Bigleaf maple syrup. At her day job, Jess is an Ecosystem Services Analyst with Stanford University and the University of Washington.
