Exterior design at Untitled at 3 Freeman Alley. Soho, June 21, 2203 A couple weeks ago I did my best to crush down my imposter syndrome and social awkwardness and I returned to my favorite city of brisk-walkers and direct-talkers for Creative Capital’s 2023 Carnival.
The three-day NYC gathering brought together our cohort of Wild Futures awardees with patrons and curators to celebrate disruptive art, big plans, and curious cocktails.
One of the most surreal moments of the trip (there were a lot of them), was seeing The Family Court Report debuted at the Lower East Side’s beautiful Metrograph theater alongside 49 other groundbreaking projects focused on technology, performing arts, and literature.
Below you’ll find FCR’s 2 minute video that was shared at the Carnival, as well as pics from the whirlwind trip. All photos are by me.
First night garden party with 2023 awardees, patrons, and the Creative Capital team at the PUBLIC Hotel Bowery Garden. Lobster rolls were passed but I wasn’t quick enough to snag one and that was the biggest regret of my trip. June 21, 2023 Light and art at the end of the alley. Untitled at 3 Freeman Alley, Soho. June 21, 2023 Personalized sustenance to get us through the screenings. Metrograph, June 22, 2023 The charming Metrograph theater, right out of a Wes Anderson film. I snuck in before the magic started to take this pic and one of those quiet but profound moments of OMG HOW DID I GET HERE started to swell up inside of me so I had to step back out and eat a box of Dots. June 22, 2023 2023 awardee Silas Riener celebrates the snacks at the Metrograph. Silas and Rashaun Mitchell are NYC-based dance artists. Their Creative Capital project is Open Machine . June 22, 2023 Really awesome that I decided to take this mirror selfie before walking over to the Metrograph and spilling coffee on the front of my white shirt just one block away from the theater. I pretended I was in a Mentos commercial and took down my hair to (mostly) cover up the splash and kept it moving. June 22, 2203. Artists on boat. Note the norm core Creative Capital baseball hat on the table. You bet I grabbed one of those. June 22, 2203 Artists making art on the deck of the boat. June 22, 2023 And then it was night and the city was all around us and we ate cotton candy and danced with abandon and it was sort of like prom for weird grownups. June 22, 2023 This is me trying to order an entire pizza for myself after the garden party. Sadly, the kitchen was already closed so the bartender comped my Campari and soda and sent me on my way and this is one more reason why I love New York. June 21, 2023 Creative Capital president and executive director Christine Kuan gives bold dreams and our 2023 cohort of artists an enthusiastic shout out following the film screenings. This is where I drank coffee, ate cheese pastries, and gathered up my strength every morning of my trip before diving into pre-pandemic style social interactions that I may have been a bit out of practice for. Untitled at 3 Freeman Alley, June 23, 2023 One last mirror selfie and a new life mantra before I found my train and headed to JFK to fly back to Keri and Teenager Leong. Soho, June 23, 2023 Share
